So first there was this phone call with the head of the department, and then after that I had a couple of in person meetings. One of them was like a sample lesson, and the other one was with the head of the school. We talked about how I would serve the students and how I'd fit into the school's culture.

I had a few interviews, and they asked me a lot of questions about how I teach and what kind of environment I'd set up for the students. We also chatted about my commute and my schedule in college, and if I was okay with giving private lessons.

I applied on Indeed over the weekend and got a call the next week. They asked if I could interview that same day, and I said yes. I went to the school and had a short interview with an administrative assistant, which went okay. I talked about myself, my degree, my goals, my experience, and why I wanted the job. The questions were about that stuff. She told me about the school and showed me around. It was a nice part of the interview. Then I met with the regional Director for about an hour. He asked me to do a short mock lesson for about 10 minutes, which the instructor thought was good. We then talked for another 30 minutes about teaching approaches, the students, scheduling, pay, planning, and what classes I could teach. It went well, and the Director was nice. I asked about setting up classes and implementing new ideas if hired, and they said teachers have freedom. The lower management seemed flexible and supportive of the kids. After that, I talked with other teachers about the subjects I'd be teaching. They showed me their class plans and gave me my schedule. This is where I saw problems. I have a BS in Chemistry and 3 years of tutoring experience in Math and Chemistry. The job asked for Bio and Physics too, which I thought I could do. But my schedule had no Chemistry, one Bio class, some Math, Anatomy (which I never took), and some middle school science classes, totaling 7 different subjects for 10 students. This meant a separate plan for each, some I'm not familiar with. I figured I could handle it with hard work. But they offered $27/hr, only for teaching time, not planning. The next day I discussed the pay, saying it wasn't enough for the work involved. I offered to discuss my schedule for higher pay or an alternative schedule for lower pay. They weren't open to any changes, so I had to decline. It felt bad because the staff seemed to really care, but upper management doesn't provide enough resources. Teachers don't get paid enough. I could make more tutoring each subject ($30+/hr) than this teaching job. They offer part-time hours (no benefits) and low pay for personalized courses. Upper management seems greedy. They hire unqualified people like me because qualified teachers would be appalled at the pay. Other teachers advised me not to take the job without more pay. The interview was casual and friendly. The people genuinely care, but upper management makes it hard. If you apply, expect a lot of work for little pay, and a high turnover rate. Most leave after a year due to the pay. It's barely minimum wage when you consider planning time. Good luck if you're desperate for cash.
