My first interview was a phone call where I had to answer a series of pre-recorded questions. It was unusual because there was no actual person to talk to, just an answering machine with questions already set up. Interviews can be stressful enough, and facing unexpected, quickly asked questions is even harder. The entire experience felt very impersonal and, honestly, a bit lazy.

I put in applications for 5 RN jobs at Froedtert Hospital over the weekend. On Monday, I got an email for a virtual interview, which involved 4 automated phone questions where I had 3 minutes for each, and a quick online form to confirm my resume stuff. A few days later, an HR person called to double-check some info and ask which jobs I liked best. Then, HR sent an email saying I could book phone interviews for two departments. I did one phone interview, and for the second one, they invited me to come in person (just as Froedtert's COVID rules for on-site interviews were changing). Both of those interviews took about 30 minutes and were group interviews with the nurse manager, assistant nurse manager, and unit educator. After each interview, I got to shadow in the departments for about an hour. Two business days after the second interview, a recruiter called to offer me a position in one of the departments. I accepted. It was pretty simple to apply for multiple jobs at once. Even though I talked to a lot of people over 18 days, they were all really organized. Things moved quickly between stages, and I always knew what was coming next. I was super happy with how they handled everything.

This whole interview thing has been super weird and unprofessional, not like anything I've gone through before. The recruiters totally ghosted me, never answering my emails or calls about open roles, references, or even just trying to figure out interview times after they invited me. My first interview seemed to go great, the hiring manager really seemed to like me and said I had a good shot. But then the second interview, it felt like they'd already decided I wasn't getting the job before I even walked in. The people interviewing me just didn't seem to care about anything I said, and they actually laughed at me! I left feeling like they just brought me in as a joke. I was definitely nervous and didn't perform my best, but that doesn't excuse being treated so condescendingly. Honestly, if they'd already picked someone else, they should have just canceled my interview. Total waste of my time.
