First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Frederick County Public Schools.
Special Education Assistant
I applied for the opening at the school and had an interview with the principal and a member of the special ed team. We talked about my past experience and they asked me questions about what's expected in special education. It felt like a really natural conversation, and I got a call back a few days later.
- Could you describe your experience with IEPs or data tracking?
Systems Support Specialist
So I had two interviews for this IT Support role. The first one made me kinda nervous from the jump, it was pretty different from other tech interviews I've had and didn't feel super friendly. Even though I knew what to expect for the second one, I was still worried I might bomb their test. Walking out of both, I felt like I could have done better. They were both on Google Meet, scheduled for 30 minutes max, intros included. Each interview had an HR person, the IT Supervisor, and three people from the team. They barely asked about my past work, or anything about work ethic or personality, just a couple of soft questions. They asked about 20 questions, many were super specific, like hot keys for Chromebooks or how to find stuff in Airwave. It seemed like they wanted one very precise answer, even if there were other correct ways to do it. For example, on testing Chromebook battery health, they seemed to want the command line answer, not the GUI way. The 'soft' questions were like, 'What makes an ideal candidate?' and 'What did you do to prep and what will you do after the interview?'. While they can interview how they want, I think they should have a skills assessment and focus more on the people side of the job. I've gone back and forth between feeling neutral and negative about the process. Setting up the interview and joining was easy, and they were quick with communication about the job status. But expecting hot key knowledge and one specific answer format for tech questions, instead of how you'd use your experience in their setup, definitely makes it a negative experience for me. If a good job opens up, I'd apply again, but I'd know what to expect better next time.

- What keyboard shortcut displays a Chromebook's serial number on the login screen?
Math Intervention Specialist
I had an onsite interview with a group of four people. The group consisted of an administrator, two teachers, and the assistant principal. They had a list of questions they wanted to ask me. After I answered each question, they asked if I wanted to share more about my expertise in that area. To wrap up, we had a short talk about my future goals. It felt like a formal interview, but the atmosphere was pretty relaxed.
- How would you handle a difficult principal?
School Secretary
The online application was submitted, but communication with HR was not great. The interview was held virtually via Google Meet with the principal and assistant principal. They were in different offices and asked questions one after the other.
- Can you describe your understanding of the duties for this position?
- Tell me about a time you took a leadership role, including both the good and bad aspects of that experience.
- How do you approach handling conflicts?
