I applied for a Visual Merchandising Manager job at Frasers Group. I used AI tools to make sure my profile and experience were a good match for the role. I have several years of experience in visual merchandising and management in the fashion industry, so my background fits the criteria. However, I was rejected twice, once for a management position and once for a standard visual merchandising role. The response I got both times was the same generic message: “However, unfortunately we have decided not to take your application further at this point in time. While we appreciate the effort you have put into your application, we don’t feel that this role was the perfect fit.” It’s disappointing to spend time and effort on applications that don’t seem to be genuinely reviewed. If you’re applying for roles at Frasers Group, be aware that you might get a similar automated response, even if your experience matches the job description.

I put in my application online and got an email saying I didn't get it. Then, a few days later, they reached out to invite me to a first-stage interview over Teams. Because of some technical problems during the call, we ended up having a regular phone call instead. After that, I was invited for a second interview at the Shirebrook HQ. I thought I'd be meeting the team and checking out the work environment. But that wasn't the case; I was taken to a separate room for an hour-long interview. The person interviewing me seemed nice and relaxed, but the interview itself wasn't structured at all and didn't seem to follow any kind of process. I had a feeling I wouldn't get the job even before it started. They also asked me a question that completely threw me off and caught me totally by surprise.

It’s a standard interview process. You get the email to arrange an interview, you go in and are probably asked to wait 20 minutes for someone to come and get you, then you are subject to the usual retail interview questions. After the interview, you’ll get a call or email offering you the job and arranging an induction day to fill out all the paperwork and do some basic “till training”, which unless you already know the system isn’t sufficient enough at all. My induction was four hours, 11-3pm and there was no offer for water or food or bathroom breaks.

First there was an online test, and if I passed that, I had an online interview. I was initially told I'd hear back in about a week, but it took a month and a half to get any news, even after I sent two follow-up emails. The poor communication didn't leave the best impression. The interview itself was okay, mostly general questions about retail and working for Frasers Group. I was also promised feedback which I never got. Apparently, the delay was because the interviewer had left the company, which I feel put me at a disadvantage. I wouldn't recommend applying.

  • From a strategic standpoint, which competitor do you think is most effective?
