Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Forward.
Product Designer
The interview process was pretty organized and clear, but man, the company culture felt really toxic. It seemed like everyone there was all-in, expecting you to prioritize work over your personal life. One executive mentioned that only certain types of people thrive at Forward, usually those who can commit fully to the company. It gave me the creeps, especially nowadays with remote work and so many successful startups. I was initially drawn to the mission, but learning more about the leadership changed my mind. They tend to hire people who are like them and aren't keen on differing opinions; they seem to want compliant employees. The designers themselves seemed alright, but I got the impression they weren't happy. Despite all these red flags, when they offered me the job, the salary was surprisingly low, especially for an in-person role in San Francisco and without perks like free meals common in other tech companies.
- Why did you choose to apply to Forward?
- Can you tell me which other companies you are considering?

The interview process was pretty standard. First, there was a 30-minute recruiter call where they asked regular behavioral questions. Then, there was a one-hour case study walkthrough with a designer.
- Can you tell me why you are looking to leave your current company?
- What makes you want to work at Forward?

I had some really good conversations throughout the process, including the recruiter call, my portfolio review, and some whiteboard exercises. Things were respectful, honest, and inspiring all the way up until the on-site interviews. However, one of the on-site interviews, which was supposed to be about culture fit, was a really shocking and disappointing experience. The interviewer was critical of my resume and dismissed my personal reasons for believing in Forward's mission.
- Can you explain what impact means to you, and which companies pique your interest and for what reasons?
- What other companies are you interested in, and why?
