So the interview was all about Jenkins (CI/CD), Kubernetes, Linux, and Bash scripting. You should really brush up on your Linux admin skills and Kubernetes, especially on-prem stuff like CoreDNS, CNI plugins, and handling short-lived processes. It started with a CoderByte challenge that wasn't core-related, then a phone screen with some basic Jenkins and Kubernetes questions, followed by a technical interview. The tech interview involves discussing your experience with the mentioned technologies and you'll get to test your skills on a remote server with k8s and Linux. This role definitely favors folks with strong Linux backgrounds.

Confirmed questions6 questions
  • Can you tell me about any problems you've run into while using Jenkins?
  • Walk me through the entire process of a CI/CD pipeline in Jenkins, from start to finish.
  • Imagine you're setting up a Kubernetes cluster from the ground up; what are the crucial things you'd think about before you even start provisioning, making sure to cover CNI and CRI?

It felt like a tribunal, long and full of useless info. They didn't discuss the job responsibilities, quotas, or accounts until I asked. It felt like they only cared about themselves. I wasn't told about responsibilities, just grilled on qualifications. The interview had like 6-7 people and a fake presentation to upper management. It's ridiculous, I've never had to go through so much, usually just a few interviews with the right people. It's like a startup with a startup mentality. The managers seem like over-promoted former salespeople. I wasn't impressed, they're a fledgling company trying to act big with a farm team approach.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

I had a straightforward discussion with the hiring manager, an SE, and the team director. It all went very well until the final call with one of the founders. It all fell apart from there. While the founder was more busy with day trading during the interview I was asked ridiculous questions that were vague and obtuse. As I was responding, he was obviously focused on the market as I could clearly hear trading bell sounds in the background. I told the recruiter to drop my candidacy after that awful call. Come to find out this company has little to no revenue with most SEs doing demo videos on YouTube to fill the void of no sales ops.

I had a good experience overall with nice people. A recruiter first reached out on LinkedIn, and then an ex-colleague also referred me. I spoke with recruiter Sonia on the phone, who was very kind and made me feel comfortable. My ex-colleague also chatted with me. Their process is a bit different; they invited me onsite for a one-hour technical interview the following week. I researched the company and the team's mission online, which really motivated me to join, especially knowing this role would be the first quality engineer. Everyone was kind and made me feel comfortable during the interview. I received feedback the very next day from Sonia.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • They asked a moderate level arrays problem, which I attempted within the time limit with some guidance.
