First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Follett.
Store Associate
I chatted with the hiring manager, who was really nice and easy to talk to. They asked me some standard questions about myself and if I could do the job. I got to ask any questions I had, and they answered them all.
- What's your availability for a weekly schedule?
Cashier
I applied via email through Craigslist and heard back the next day. They asked me to come in the following week. When I arrived, there were about 10 other people applying. We all went outside for a group interview in a circle. The managers started asking us questions randomly. It was a bit intimidating with everyone watching and customers walking by. They asked each person 2-3 questions. Afterwards, they showed us how the store was set up. I paid attention because they then gave us a quiz about what we saw and if we remembered the managers' names. I forgot one manager's name and thought I messed up, but I got a call back over a week later saying I got the job. I was really happy since it was my first job and getting one with no experience was tough.
- Can you tell me about a time you had to handle a difficult customer?
Cashier
After submitting an application, I got a call the next day to set up an interview. It was a one-on-one meeting with the Assistant Manager, who handles all the hiring. They had to ask me some standard 'stock' questions from Follett. These questions were about multitasking, customer interaction, and ethical practices. The manager seemed most interested in the question about how to handle being interrupted while working on a task by a customer. I said I'd help the customer first, even if it meant restarting my task, but would get back to it right away because customer service is the priority in retail. I was offered the job within a week after all interviews were done. The role was originally temporary/seasonal, but they kept me on because I did a good job.
- Could you explain what shrink refers to in a retail context?
- How would you best prevent shoplifting?
