First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Florida Virtual School.
Instructor
I was contacted by a recruiter for an initial interview that was scheduled for the following week. Before the interview, I received an email with details about the position and the Flex program. The first interview was with another recruiter, who asked me some basic questions about teaching. I was then offered a second interview the following week with the initial recruiter and instructional leaders. In this interview, the questions were more in-depth, focusing on typical classroom and lesson-related topics. I was offered a position, but it turned out to be for a "pool" position, which was not mentioned in the original job posting or during any of my communications with the recruiters. I was informed that my position would be held for a year and I might be called in within a few weeks or months. I'm not particularly optimistic about it.

So first I had a phone interview, and after that I had to do an online module for technology skills. Then I went to the Orlando office for a presentation and a one-on-one meeting with the Instructional Leader, who is basically the principal. The interview was from 9 to 1, and I had to wear a suit or blazer, not business casual. The presentation was okay, but the ILs were talking behind me, which was distracting. We all waited to be interviewed, and there were 12 of us with only 2 ILs. I waited a long time because I was the second to last one called. They told us we couldn't have any part-time work for the first year and had to resign from our current jobs. They asked basic questions about technology and data. At the end, I had to ask my questions, but they cut me off after only letting me ask one more, even though we were supposed to be there until 1 and it was only 11:45. I asked about remote work support, turnover rates, and employee feedback. Maybe my questions made them uncomfortable. They don't seem to value your time, especially since I drove over 2 hours each way.

- How do you leverage data to inform your teaching methods?
- How would you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

The interview process started with a phone interview, followed by a large group interview at their headquarters, and then an online panel interview. I was honest about my nearly twenty years of successful teaching experience and my competence, supported by good principal reviews. However, I found the process inefficient and frustrating, lasting 22 months in total. After the initial interviews, there was a gap of over a year with no communication. Then, they contacted me about an online interview scheduled two months later. Following that interview, I waited another five weeks for a decision. Although not being selected is fine, the extremely long duration and perceived lack of professionalism in keeping candidates waiting so long was disappointing.
