Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Fivestars.
Software Engineer
So there was a recruiter screen, then some standard technical interviews and a system design question. Also some behavioral stuff and meet the team interviews. It was an onsite interview, though that might have changed post-COVID.
- How would you design a deck of cards?
Software Engineer
The interview process began with a recruiter call, followed by two separate coding challenges. The coding challenges themselves were a negative experience because the interviewers were not senior developers. One interviewer was a junior developer and the other was fresh out of college. It's questionable why junior developers are interviewing senior candidates. The first coding challenge went okay and had an interesting task. However, the second interviewer was pretentious and uninterested in my background, focusing instead on an obscure JavaScript challenge. This challenge required deep knowledge of internal JavaScript behavior and was not well-designed. She then provided another challenge that was easily solvable without optimization. When I finished, she gave short, uninterested answers to my questions. Overall, it seems I avoided a bad fit given this interviewer's attitude.
- How would you execute an asynchronous function without employing Promise or async/await syntax?
Software Engineer
I handed in my resume at a career fair and had a nice chat with a recruiter. Later that week, I got an email inviting me to a phone interview. The person I spoke with was friendly and relaxed. The question wasn't super difficult, but I think I could have given a better answer.
