First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at First Midwest Bank.
Bank Teller
The interview process was smooth, and the branch manager was great. I don't recall much else about it, but it was a good experience overall. It helped me figure out my future career. There were a lot of trainings, but not much flexibility due to branch hours, though it worked out well.
- Why should we hire you?
Compliance Manager
HR reached out to me and we talked about what I'm looking for in my career. After about 30 minutes, they said I'd meet with an SVP. About a week later, I met with the SVP and we had a great chat about the bank, the job, the compliance program structure, my background, and what comes next. Two days later, I was told I'd be meeting with the Chief Compliance Officer. We met at the Chicago office and it was pretty similar to the SVP chat. I called the HR person the next day to give them feedback. Two days after that, they told me they wanted to offer me the job. I got the offer letter and took it. It was a good experience overall, and I'm excited to start.
- How do you keep up-to-date with changes in regulations?
Chief Enterprise Architect
The interview process was really smooth and felt quite engaging. I had a very thorough prep session with the recruitment lead, where they clearly laid out the role and expectations. They also explained the interview steps in advance and shared the backgrounds of the interviewers, which helped set expectations at each level. Overall, it was a great experience that taught me a lot about the organization and its business goals. I was left with a strong positive impression of the company and its rich corporate culture.

- Can you discuss specific business cases relevant to this role?
- How would you achieve business objectives in this position?
Underwriter
First, a recruiter emailed me to set up a phone interview. The next day, I got a schedule for a second, on-site interview. I requested time off and drove an hour to get there, having prepped for a week. Upon arrival, HR informed me the manager was unexpectedly out due to a family emergency, which could have easily been communicated earlier. They offered to reschedule a second phone interview as a make-up. However, I'm left wondering if an employer would hire someone they've never met in person, especially when other candidates had completed their on-site interviews. Ultimately, three weeks after that rescheduled phone interview, I received a rejection stating they hired someone with more experience, despite my five years in banking and the role requiring only 1-3 years. I'm at a loss for words describing this bank.
- How did you handle the underwriting of a loan?
