Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at FINRA.
Java Developer
Got an initial call with the team. Then there was a 30-minute panel interview with two people. It was pretty straightforward if you know core Java well and have about 3 years of experience in Java.
- Can you explain what an interface is in Java?
- What are the core concepts of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)?
- What are the fundamental concepts of core Java?

So the whole process started with a staffing agency setting things up. First, there was a 30-minute phone screen where the interviewer just went over J2EE project development stuff, kind of high-level, checking keywords and tech I knew. Then, the face-to-face interview lasted about 2 hours. Everyone there was prepared with questions, some on their phones, some on paper. They covered Core Java, system design, and some other things. They asked about Spring and SQL too. The parking lot design question was a surprise. The only bummer was no feedback from the recruiter afterward, even though the interviews themselves felt positive.
- Can you explain the difference between finally, finalize, and final?
- What's the difference between ArrayList and LinkedList?
- Can you write a program that causes an OutOfMemoryError?
Java Developer
The manager started by asking me to introduce myself and then asked some questions based on my resume. Finally, he asked if I had any questions for him and shared some information about the company. The interview lasted about 30-40 minutes.
- Can you explain how to reverse a String?
- Tell me about sorting algorithms.
- What is Big O notation?
