Software Engineer Intern
So it was an in-person thing. First, we did a behavioral interview. It was 2 people interviewing me, and we were in the office. Then, I had a technical interview by myself. We talked about system design, and I had to draw it out on the whiteboard.
- Tell me about your most memorable project.
Software Engineer
This interview experience was unique because it focused entirely on soft skills and behavioral questions, with no technical ones at all. The first call was with the Director, and it was all soft skills. The second call was with the CTO, and it was the same. Then came the onsite interview. I expected technical questions at this point, but it turned out to be a 2.5-hour session of behavioral and soft-skill questions. Many questions were repeated from the earlier rounds. They did ask about my projects and the languages/features I've worked on, but that was more of a technical discussion than a technical interview. Even though the role was for a Staff Software Engineer in Python, they didn't ask any Python questions, let alone coding or system design. The interview was very open-ended. At one point, a senior engineer interviewing me admitted he didn't know how to intersect two lists in Python, which made me think they don't ask technical questions because they might not be technically proficient themselves. Throughout the entire 4 hours of interviews, I never got the chance to demonstrate my technical abilities.
- Behavioral questions
- Soft skills questions
Senior Software Engineer
They use third-party recruiters who just read questions off a script and then send your answers to the hiring manager. They make it known they want you in the office and are rude about it. It feels like an out-of-touch company trying to run a FAANG-like interview process but with low pay and no growth. The people seem checked out and uninterested. I wouldn't have applied if the market wasn't like this.
- Tell me why you are interested in working here.
- Describe how your communication style changes when working with a junior engineer.
- What would you say is your greatest weakness?
