It was a pretty long process! I went through three interviews, and each time there were more people on the call. I eventually interviewed with the managing editor too. At the very end, they gave me a writing assignment to do.

The communication with this company was really poor. I always had to be the one reaching out. The hiring manager didn't even know his own phone number and called me asking if I was still coming, implying I'd missed a 9 AM interview when he'd told me it was at 10 AM. Two weeks after the interview, I had to email HR again. I get that not everyone is a good fit, but they need to realize everyone is a customer, and if this is how they treat applicants, I can't imagine how they treat their actual customers.

Since it was a new store build, interviews were conducted in stages. Candidates would sign in at a table and wait to be called. Managers had tables set up and would call prospects over. The interviewer would review your application/resume and ask questions from it, plus some situational questions like 'what specific outdoor experience do you have that may be useful for a customer looking to go camping'. You could also ask them questions. If they were interested, you'd get a second interview right then and there, which was similar in style. They would then offer you a position and the pay (I was offered a job different from the one I applied for). If you accepted, they'd tell you the date and time for orientation.

Behavioral Presentation

The interview process was very structured, with questions coming from a corporate form. They seemed more interested in my outdoor experiences than my previous work history. The manager was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. I learned during the interview that it was a part-time position, not full-time, which I wish I had known beforehand. Overall, it was a positive experience, and I was offered a second interview. I would consider working there part-time if it fits with my current full-time job schedule.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • Can you share a significant outdoor experience that was a turning point in your life?
