First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Feeding America.
Development Manager
I had three interviews with Feeding America back in 2021. It was pretty standard stuff. First, there was a phone call, and then two panel interviews with people from the department. Everyone was really nice and it felt pretty conversational. What really sucked, though, was not hearing back after the last interview, even after I followed up. You'd think one of the biggest nonprofits around would at least let everyone know what's up after they interviewed them, especially if they put in the time.

Insights Manager
The interview process was pretty standard and quick. First, I had a round with the hiring manager, and then a second round was a panel interview with about 4 or 5 other people from the team. The questions they asked were pretty typical. I really enjoyed talking with the hiring manager; they were great and even offered a follow-up chat to answer any more questions I had since the interview itself was so short. The HR team, unfortunately, was the least pleasant part of the experience. Early on, HR asked if I'd be okay with a salary in the mid to high 80s, even though the job posting said it went up to 98k. I said we could talk about salary later. When I got the offer and asked about the company's financial stability, they said they were very solid, had plans for the next few years, and are the second-largest non-profit in the US. I then asked if they could offer more, noting that the offer was 15k below the typical range for my experience and Chicago's cost of living. HR actually chuckled and then questioned my salary research (which is publicly available on Glassdoor and other sites), mentioned they were doing salary band equity reviews, and pointed out that's why they were upfront about the salary range. I was under the impression the salary went up to 98k from the listing, which felt misleading, and that they'd at least offer within the mid to high 80s as they mentioned. HR wouldn't budge on the salary, likely because I kept pushing for fair compensation for a management role. The team itself seems great and really into their work. The organization appears nice overall, but HR often reflects how the whole company operates.
- Can you share an instance of your collaboration with cross-functional teams?
Manager
The interview process took longer than expected because it spanned the holidays. Throughout the entire process, HR kept me informed about any delays and when I could expect to hear back. The first interview was with the hiring manager, followed by a second interview with a panel of three co-workers. The final interview was with the team's CEO. Overall, it was a positive experience.
- Can you describe the biggest challenge you've faced working in a team and how you handled it?
