First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Federal Reserve Board.
Economic Research Intern
It was a very quick process with typical questions and a panel of two junior professionals, one of whom was a prior intern. There was just one interview, but a lot of paperwork was required to check eligibility. However, it's been hard to figure out if the next steps with the paperwork mean an offer is coming.
- Can you tell me about your experience using quantitative analysis software like R, Python, or Stata?
Research Assistant
I had two interviews, each with about 2-3 economists from different teams. Each interview was about 1-2 hours long. They asked a mix of behavioral and technical questions, focusing on econometrics and data. They also asked a lot about my undergraduate research projects and my future interests.
- Can you interpret these Stata results for me?
- Tell me about your research projects.
- What are your future research interests?
IT
I applied online and a recruiter reached out. Then I had multiple interviews with 6 people total. The interview process was easy, they took turns asking questions. The last interview was with 2 seniors and it was fun. They asked me scenario based questions that were also technical. It has been over 2 months and I haven't heard back. I think I did well because they asked follow up questions and agreed. It was a waste of time.
- Can you explain the workings of malware?
Data Analyst
We had a pretty chill chat with the team lead and his manager. They asked me some open-ended stuff about what I've done before, why I wanted to intern at the Fed, and what the Fed actually does. Then, they quizzed me on some econometrics concepts like OLS and basic stats, and also some finance stuff, like what stocks and bonds are, how options are valued, and how interest rates mess with all that.
- Could you state the three assumptions of OLS?
- What exactly is a bond?
- Regarding bonds, what factors influence their return?
