First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Family Dollar Stores.
District Manager
First, I had a recruiter call who saw my resume on Monster. They asked a few resume questions, some technical ones, and what I was looking for, which felt like a standard HR screening. Then I spoke with the Regional Manager for a follow-up, covering more about my experiences and accomplishments. After that was a detailed interview focusing on business metrics and understanding, really testing my knowledge base. They seemed really interested in how I'd improve company culture (staffing/retention) and boost sales. Later, there were follow-up chats with the HR manager and LP. The final step was flying out to the area hub for an interview panel with the GVP and regional manager. They gave me an offer the same day.
- Can you detail your greatest strength and weakness, and explain how you are working to overcome it?
- Could you outline your strategy for Loss Prevention within a retail setting?
- Based on your previous work, how would you adjust to the culture at FD?
District Manager
Talked with a friend who was an RHRM, then officially applied for a DM role in Cincinnati OH. Got a call from a Field Recruiter who did a phone screen and pitched me on a DM role in Sioux Falls SD. 4 days later, I had a phone interview with the RVP and RHRM. 3 days after that, I interviewed with the RLPM. The following week, the recruiter called and I flew to Minneapolis to meet the RVP, RHRM, and AOM (Metro DM). We went to lunch and talked more about the job, district size (stores and sales volume), growth potential, available resources, training, tools, and field business partners. Exactly one week later, the recruiter called to offer me the job and asked about my salary expectations. They were offering $61k (range 60-65), which is pretty bad unless it's a high-shrink or hard-to-staff district, or a metro AOM. FYI, only the GVP, not the RVP, can approve pay outside the range. Total waste of time, so no thanks.
- What are your current boss's strengths and areas for development?
District Manager
As a District Manager, I interview all candidates for assistant manager and store manager positions. Each District Manager has different expectations, and some hire store managers from outside the company while others promote from within.
- What value do you bring to the company?
