Personal Trainer
They had me take a class in each style offered. Then I talked to a manager about my fitness background and coaching styles. We also got a feel for the member base. We discussed types of coaching and I even helped coach a class with someone who is already a coach there.
- Have you ever instructed a group fitness class previously?
Studio Manager
I had to teach a bit of a class with another candidate, then show the exercises. Then we talked about how to manage an induction and I had to present the class using their script and within the time limit.
- Teach a few minutes of a class with another candidate
- Demonstrate the exercises
- Discuss how to handle an induction
Coach
First, I had an in-person meeting with the hiring manager, which went well. Then, I was invited back for two 45-minute classes. After that, I was asked to return a third time to teach a class again, all within about two weeks. However, during the third session, the main decision-maker didn't attend the scheduled meeting. The hiring manager then said I'd get an answer the following Monday, after I'd already done a 5-minute workout intro at home that I had to memorize on my own time (this was the fifth time I was there). On Tuesday, they followed up by asking me to come in at 5:15 AM to co-coach a class, as the decision-maker would be present. I refused to come back a sixth time without pay, especially after being promised an offer and having already invested so much time and effort. The whole experience was unnecessarily stressful, and I felt my time and resources weren't respected by the decision-maker. They didn't follow up after I insisted I wouldn't return for a sixth visit.
- Can you tell me about your experience?
- Could you introduce yourself?
