Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at f.y.e..
Sales Associate
After submitting my application online, I got a call back about a week later. I showed up dressed in slacks and a button-up shirt. The interviewer explained that they needed more staff because many employees were leaving to return to college. He asked pretty standard questions, mostly related to sales and my past experiences. For example, he asked how I'd convince someone to buy something, why I'd be a good fit for f.y.e., and what I knew about the company. He also mentioned how much the company focuses on selling discount cards and emphasized that it's all about sales targets, so the main goal is to sell, sell, sell. After the interview, he said he was interested in hiring me and would call the following week to sort out the schedule. He actually called the next day and asked if I could start the following Saturday.
- Could you try to sell me your favorite CD?
- Can you convince me to purchase your favorite CD?
Sales Associate
I applied online and got a call the next day to schedule an interview. I went in the next day, a little early, and they told me to check out the store while I waited for the manager. The manager asked me typical interview questions about my experience and availability. They also asked about my music and movie knowledge and my favorite genres, which I could answer well since I'm a music major. The interview was pretty short and laid-back, and I got a job offer right away. Be nice on the phone, be nice to the staff when you get there, and be nice to any customers you see. They care more about having someone they'll like working with than just experience.
- What makes you a good candidate for this position?
- Could you share your favorite movie genre and explain your reasoning?
- Could you share your favorite music genres and explain your reasoning?
Sales Associate
I applied online and then got a call a few days later to set up an interview. It was a very short interview. I wasn't hired in the end. The interview was very casual, and they seemed a little unprepared. They went through a script about talking with customers. They asked why I wanted the job and went over my resume.
- What is your motivation for this role?
- What are your key strengths?
- Can you tell me about yourself?
