First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at ExxonMobil.
Intern
For this role, it's really important to give good answers to behavioral questions because they show how you solve problems and what you've done before. You also really need to know SQL, Excel, and how to do data analysis stuff. Having experience that matches the job helps a lot too. The hiring managers are pros and will look at your technical skills, how well you analyze things, and if you're a good fit overall. If you prepare and show off your skills, you'll do much better in the interview.
- Tell me about a time you were part of a team project. What did you do when there were disagreements?
- Describe a situation where you had to work with a teammate who was difficult. How did you handle it?
- Recount an instance where you helped a coworker reach a shared objective.
Intern
I got the chance to interview for the Summer Internship Program at Exxon through Auburn University after submitting my resume on Handshake. I received a call in early September for an interview scheduled for the following week. The interview felt pretty standard for engineering internships. They asked a lot of questions about my past experiences and leadership skills, focusing on situational scenarios. The interviewers were nice and engaging, making the whole thing feel relaxed and enjoyable. I'm still waiting to hear if I'll get an offer.
- Describe a situation where you faced and overcame challenges while under pressure.
Intern
I traveled an hour for their 30-minute first round behavioral interview. They asked basic questions using the STAR format about teamwork, leadership, and diversity. However, they ghosted me after the interview, even though they said in the email I'd get updates within a week. I only found out I was no longer under consideration by checking the app portal two weeks later. It was a terrible HR recruitment process. I realized how Exxon treats candidates who spent time applying.
