Assistant Store Manager
The second interview for the Assistant Store Manager position, which took place in person with the District Manager, started off poorly within the first 5 minutes. I felt a distinct lack of personal respect from him. Throughout the interview, his personal phone rang three times, and each time he paused the conversation to check it but didn't mute or answer it. It was challenging to continue after each interruption because he also kept yawning and seemed completely uninterested in what I was saying. For instance, he repeatedly misstated the names of my previous employers, even though he had my resume and I corrected him, showing he wasn't paying attention. It was unbelievable that I was being interviewed on customer service skills by someone who is supposed to be a model of good customer service within the company. The only thing that seemed to spark his interest was when he discovered I was bilingual. He also didn't take any notes during the entire interview, which is unusual based on my past interview experiences. Overall, the experience was frustrating and very disappointing, especially since my initial interview for this role was extremely pleasant. The lack of respect shown towards me and my time as an interviewee was shocking; I've truly never experienced anything like it before.
- Can you define integrity and explain its importance?
- How would you handle a situation with a customer who is upset?
Store Manager
The interview process was pretty standard. It started with a phone interview, followed by two in-person interviews that each lasted over an hour. During the second in-person interview, an extra person was there, which felt a bit awkward. I didn't get the job, and honestly, I think it might be for the best since I never heard back. It felt unprofessional, especially for a company that talks about having a good culture. So, if you don't get selected, don't expect any kind of notification. It's wild, but a recruiter from Extra Space actually called me three weeks later to see if I was still interested in the position I interviewed for three times just a month ago.
- Could you do a sales role-play where you pretend to sell a unit?
Store Manager
I applied online and then took a long job questionnaire with over 100 questions. After that, the District Training Manager called me for a phone interview. We had a good conversation, and then scheduled an in-person interview at the property for a few days later. I met with the District Training Manager, toured the property, and things went well, so they set up another in-person interview with the District Manager for the following week. A week later, I had a 45-minute interview with the District Manager. They told me they'd call if I was selected because they had more interviews to do. The District Manager called the next day and offered me the job! Then I had to submit my background information and take a drug test. About a week after the interview, my background and drug test results came back clear. HR called to congratulate me and said the District Manager would contact me to set a start date. The very next day, the District Manager called, and we set my first day for the following Monday. Both the District Training Manager and District Manager were really nice, provided lots of detail, and communicated well throughout the entire process.
- Can you share an instance where you had a disagreement with your manager and how you resolved it?
- Describe a situation where you went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service to a new customer.
- What qualities or experiences do you possess that make you a strong candidate for this role?
