First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Epsilon Systems.
Data Engineer
So the hiring process had like four main steps. First up was a recruiter call to chat about why I'm interested and my background. Then, a technical interview with a senior Data Engineer, covering SQL basics, data pipelines, and some Spark questions. After that, there was a case study, I had 48 hours to create an ETL pipeline using public data. Finally, I had a chat with the team manager to make sure I was a good cultural fit and to talk about the company's overall project. The whole thing wrapped up in about two weeks.
- What would you do if a data pipeline suddenly got a lot more data?
- How would you handle a sudden surge in data volume within a data pipeline?
- Tell me about how you would manage a data pipeline experiencing a sudden increase in data volume.
ML/AI Intern
There was only one interview with five people on the call who asked some typical questions. It was a good experience, everyone was really nice and respectful. It lasted about an hour. I didn't hear back for a few weeks, and then I was told that the position was canceled.
- Can you tell me about a time you had to mediate a disagreement within a group project?
Software Engineer
I applied online for the job in San Diego and had a phone screen with the recruiter. He promised to call back for another interview twice but never did. After I emailed him, he finally set up the interview and said he'd call beforehand to check in, but again, no call. The interview with two managers was supposed to be two hours long. The manager started by asking me to turn on my camera, but neither of them did. It felt like it wasn't a real conversation from the start. She then grilled me about my resume and asked questions unrelated to the role I applied for. She rushed through them so much that I was just saying yes or no. She ended the interview 45 minutes early. I definitely wouldn't work with this company.
- Write code to solve the FizzBuzz problem.
- What's the first non-repeated character in a string?
- How would you approach string manipulation tasks?
DevSecOps Engineer
Applied online. About a week later, I had a phone screening with the Tech Recruiter, who asked about my resume and if I was interested in the role. Two days after that, I spoke with the Assistant FSO about my security clearance. Three days later, I had a second technical phone screening with a Senior Software Engineer. This interview started fast with lots of DevSecOps questions, which I could answer as long as they were related to the job description. It felt like she was trying to dig into my brain, but in a rude and unprofessional way, not letting me answer properly. She rushed me, even though the interview was only 30 minutes long, not the scheduled hour. I gave quick, detailed answers, but then she started asking irrelevant questions about multi-threading, databases, and indexing. When I didn't know an answer, she'd quickly tell me the answer in a shameful way, making it feel like a competition instead of an interview. I pointed out these questions weren't on the job description, which seemed to snap her out of it, and she went back to asking about my resume. In the last 5 minutes, I asked about the company culture, people, and contract vehicles, but her answers were shaky and not straightforward, despite her being there for 10 years. This interview was enough to understand the company's work-life balance.
- DevOps related questions like containers, Kubernetes, and stuff on the job description.
