First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Epic Games.
QA Lead
The interview process took about 2 months and felt like an emotional rollercoaster. During this time, the job and role changed, but they still wanted me to continue interviewing. Each interview had 2 people interviewing me for 45 minutes. Everyone was nice and easy to talk to, until they asked if I had played the game, which caught me off guard. Later, the feedback mentioned that I hadn't played or downloaded the game, which wasn't even a requirement. I've worked in 4+ major industries and never had to know the industry products before being hired. The feedback was positive though, and they said the job evolved which wasn't fair to me. They mentioned that if the job hadn't changed, it would have been a great fit. I felt a bit betrayed and unsure how to react. It seems like they really wanted a gamer, as a friend mentioned before. I probably wouldn't interview at EPIC again.
- Have you played Fortnite?
Software QA Lead
The interview process was multiple rounds. It started with one recruiter and then a different recruiter. After that I interviewed with people from QA as well as the software team. The process took a little over two weeks. At the end, the recruiter called, gave me feedback, and then proceeded to tell me they were in a hiring freeze and couldn’t continue with my application.
- How do you handle a deadline that seems impossible to meet?
QA Manager
I first spoke with a recruiter who then scheduled a meeting with the Director and Lead. Both of them were late for the meeting. The Lead asked about how I handle difficult team members and stakeholder management. The Director couldn't tell me what KPIs the team is measured by and mentioned they need someone adaptable and pragmatic. There was an assumption made that I wouldn't understand how changes to a movement feature would affect gameplay and that I'd be the one making those kinds of decisions. Once that assumption was made, I realized they had already formed opinions and weren't really listening to my interest in the game or the team. They also mentioned multiple times that working at Epic is 'hectic' and that processes are lacking.
- What's your approach to dealing with pushback from stakeholders?
- Describe how you manage difficult coworkers.
- What strategies would you use to build relationships with over 70 QA individuals?
