Senior Designer
The hiring process was quite fast! After applying, I had an initial HR call about a week later. Then, three days passed before I had a video chat with my potential manager to discuss my experience and the role. The following week involved another video call, this time with two other managers I might collaborate with sometimes. Finally, two weeks after that, I had my last interview in person with one of the company founders.
- Can you share a strength and a weakness?
iOS Developer
The interview started with a quick 20-minute phone chat where they asked me 5 questions about iOS development. After that, I had to do a code test. I submitted a bunch of code to show my skills and how well I could do the assignment, even adding some extra helper functions to show my capabilities. Unfortunately, they didn't want to move forward, citing that they noticed my code test was full of previously written helper code and utilities. They were expecting fresh code for the test without any rewrites or convenience methods, even though the README said I could use any code or libraries I felt were necessary. The email I got specifically said, 'We noticed the code test is full of helper code and utilities you had written in the past. We were really hoping for fresh code for a code test without rewrites and convenience methods.' The README, however, states: 'Feel free to use whichever framework / library you deem necessary to complete this task.' The library I chose was actually my own. It seems they are really against reusing ANY code or library written in the past, even if it's your own and has been proven effective. I believe the only reason they rejected it was because I had dates in my documentation showing when the code was originally written. I would have rewritten the same code if I did it today.
- Can you explain the difference between a copy and a deep copy?
- What is the difference between atomic and non-atomic properties?
- Could you explain the difference between a class and a struct?
Web Developer
I applied online and the whole thing took about 2 weeks. First, I had a phone screen, but they mentioned they were actually seeking a more senior dev. The recruiter then contacted me again because she and the team really liked my profile and still wanted to move forward with me. Since I had another offer on the table, the recruiter was super helpful and sped things up, getting me onsite to meet everyone. The onsite was pretty good, with conversations about my background. I could tell the team was technically strong from our talks. I even learned some stuff during the interview. Even though I didn't get an offer because of my seniority level, I'd still suggest applying.
- What's a new technology that sparks your interest?
- Can you share an instance where you encountered a conflict and then took a step back to view the situation more broadly?
- Describe your experience.
Front End Developer
The interview process was really smooth and direct! First, I had a great chat with Corey, the VP of Technology. This was to see if my experience and personality were a good match. Then, I was given a test project to build a simple webpage from a provided design. I really liked this part because it was directly related to what a front-end developer does. After that, I met with two development team members to discuss my project and my past experience. That was the final step before I got the offer!
- Can you explain your approach and reasoning behind the test project?
- Do you have any questions regarding CSS?
- What do you like most about JavaScript?
