User Experience Designer
Applied for a job I didn't have experience in, but they said they weren't looking for someone experienced. Got an email after 3 days asking to fill out a questionnaire about past experience and salary. Then, weirdly, they emailed again after another 3 days thanking me for an interview I never had. They also asked me to take a 15-minute online IQ test and provide professional references, which I did. Four days later, I got an email saying I didn't get the job. The worst part was they used the wrong name at the start of the email, not even a spelling mistake, just a completely different name. It felt like they weren't sure who they were talking to the whole time.
- No questions were asked as there was no in-person interview. I did complete an IQ test, which I found to be quite enjoyable.
UX Designer
Had a typical phone interview with the UX lead, who was really cool and answered all my questions. Then, a week later, there was a slide deck presentation with the UX Director and a mock usability test using one of my current projects. I think it went well. I decided not to accept the job because even though the UX team seemed top-notch and I'd love to work with them, and they have a clear growth path, the company's benefits are subpar and the salary wasn't exciting. The insurance situation, with a gap after 30 days and before COBRA, is not great. Plus, the 401k matching is so low it doesn't come close to the usual 4%. It's a shame because the UX team is great, but the overall package wasn't enough for me to make the move.
- Can you describe your ideal UX work environment?
- How would you approach helping a struggling team member who isn't performing well?
- What do you consider your main strengths and weaknesses as a UX designer?
UX Designer
First, I had lunch with Kaiden, a lead designer. He gave me an overview of Entrata and then connected me with HR. Following that, there was a screener with HR. Next, I had a 1-hour interview that was mostly behavioral with Jeff, who would be my potential team lead. Finally, I had a 1-hour interview with Jeff and Les, the UX Director. The first part of this interview involved a mock usability test, and the second part was a case study presentation.
- What distinguishes a good UX designer from a great one, in your opinion?
- Can you share an instance where you had to tackle a challenging problem?
