& Process

I got a call from the recruiter who explained the role. After that, I had 3 phone interviews with Technology Directors, and then I met the team I would have been joining in person. The whole thing took about 2 months because they were pretty slow to get back to me; I had to follow up with about 10 emails and calls to keep things moving. It all seemed to go well, and then I was just waiting. After a week and a half of no response, the recruiter finally called to say that due to 'strategy changes,' they wouldn't be making an offer. I was bummed but also relieved it was over.

I got an email from a recruiter about an EMC opportunity in May 2010. I spoke with the recruiter for 10min that morning and told them to submit me for a Solutions Architect role. 20min later, an EMC rep called and scheduled a technical phone interview for the next day. The next day, EMC really grilled me on exchange 2003/2007/2010 for 2 hours, but I felt confident I did well. The following morning, the same EMC rep called again to schedule a second technical interview for a week later. I was interviewed by an in-house Senior EMC exchange architect and was grilled on exchange design, deployment, troubleshoot, migrations, and best practice approach scenarios. I did well on everything except his exchange 5.5 migration questions. The following day, the EMC rep called again and said I did great on both technical screenings and would do a presentation for the final interview in front of a panel. She emailed me a scenario and said she'd contact me to schedule the final interview date. I started my proposal presentation and finished it in 3 hours. A week went by with no callback. I tried contacting the EMC rep for 2 weeks, and the recruiter tried too. I finally got in touch with her and was told the presentation interview was for direct hire, and I had applied for a contract position which only required the two technical screenings. She then congratulated me and said they were placing me on a project in NYC to start the next week. The following week, no calls from the EMC rep. After tracking her down, she gave me the same line: 'we have projects where placing you on one this week.' After 4 weeks, I'm still waiting to be placed on a project, and now it's July 2010. My colleagues and peers consider me an exchange expert, and I have the track record to prove it. If you consider yourself an expert in your field, don't let EMC waste your time like I did!

This was a super fast hiring process. It started with a phone technical screen, then a more in-depth technical phone interview with another architect. After that, I had a video call with the hiring manager, and then they extended a great offer. I really liked the whole experience and was impressed by how quickly they moved to hire me once they saw I had the right skills. If EMC thinks you're a good fit, they'll really go out of their way to get you on board.
