First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Education Development Center, Inc..
SBCC Specialist
Applied online and got an interview invitation two weeks later. The interview included a mix of technical and competency-based questions, with a panel of three interviewers. It was a good opportunity to share my thoughts and learn more about EDC's work in Malawi.
- Can you introduce yourself and explain your interest in this role?
Communications Director
I got two steps into the interview process - first a quick screening interview with the HR department of the main organization over the phone, and then a Zoom interview with a panel of staff from the actual organization itself. The panel interview went well, I think I connected with them and they seemed to like some of my questions. But then I heard nothing back from anyone. I think it's really rude, especially since the organization has 'Action' in its name. They couldn't even take a moment to send a quick email to let candidates know they weren't moving forward. It's especially disappointing given their mission is suicide prevention. You'd expect compassion, but their lack of communication shows none. It makes me wonder if they can truly help people if they can't even treat applicants with basic kindness.
- I was asked a standard set of questions.
Public Health Specialist
Applied and got contacted a few weeks later for a screening call that was supposed to be 20min but ran for 45. Then I moved on to the next round which was an interview panel with 3 people. They rescheduled it the day before bc someone wasn’t available. During the interview, everyone seemed really nice and questions were based off the job description so I was very prepared and felt very confident after interview. Was pretty surprised when they sent me a generic email two days later that I would not be moving on to next round. One thing to note is that they put a huge salary range in the description and then when I discussed salary with the hiring manager they said it was because they were actually interviewing for various projects. The posting was not advertised as such so I feel this was misleading.
- Can you describe what your first year in this position might entail?
- Tell me about your experience working with diverse populations.
- How do you feel about and what experience do you have with taking on additional responsibilities beyond your defined job duties?
Literacy Officer
I was contacted by a recruiter because my qualifications matched the job. After reviewing the job description, I spoke with the recruiter. She indicated that the organization was looking for a candidate with a very specific skillset, which I possessed, giving me a strong chance. The phone interview went well. Following the interview, she asked me to complete and return some paperwork promptly, which I did the same day. A week later, I followed up. The recruiter responded the same day stating that they had just heard back and I was not selected. I was quite disappointed, especially given my 10+ years in literacy development, 7 years in international development, and relevant degrees, which align perfectly with the job requirements. The recruiter mentioned they were seeking 20-30 years of experience, which surprised me as the job posting stated 7-10 years. I am sharing this feedback because if they require such extensive experience, it should be clearly stated in the advertisement to avoid wasting candidates' time. If this was the requirement, the recruiter should have been aware and not led me to believe I was an ideal candidate. I feel the company misled me and wasted my time.
- Could you describe your management style?
