Teacher
I showed up as a "walk in" the day after applying and the Student Success Director let me interview. I wanted to bypass HR and show initiative. The director let me talk about my qualifications for about 45 mins. They said I made a good impression and would be recommended for a follow up, putting me steps ahead. Two days later, HR called about salary, and there was no room to negotiate. I set up an interview with the director and department chair for a few days later. We talked for an hour about workflow and efficiency, I got one subject-related question, and then I had to write out responses to 3-4 pages of typical student questions, either rewriting the question or giving feedback on a student's sample answer. Then I could ask my questions. I didn't ask when I'd hear back. A few days later, I called HR to check on the process. They said they were still interviewing and in a rush but wanted the right person. I emailed the director to thank him for both interviews. On Saturday afternoon, I got an email saying another candidate was chosen, likely due to the large "candidate pool."
- Given 75 assessments to grade, 2 hours of tutoring availability, and a parent inquiry about their child's progress, how would you manage to complete all assessments by day's end?
- Can you share your background working with special education students?
- Describe a situation where you had a conflict with a coworker and explain how you resolved it.
Marketing Analyst
I applied online, and a recruiter contacted me about 5 days later to set up a phone interview. It went well, so she set up another phone interview with the SVP for the next day. A week after that, she scheduled me for an in-person meeting with the company president. The whole thing went pretty smoothly. They asked basic background questions, how I'd market some of their programs, and about the company's history. After two weeks, I emailed the recruiter for an update, but got no response. Turns out they filled the job and removed it from their website. It's strange because she was so responsive before, and then just ghosted me. She kept emphasizing how important the SVP and president were and expected a lot of professionalism from me. Honestly, job seekers expect professionalism from recruiters too!
- What's your strategy for marketing our drop out recovery program?
Technology Manager
First, I talked to a HR person on the phone. They asked a lot of questions about my past work and if I'd worked with schools. They also asked about training, teaching, and reporting. Then, the regional technology manager hit me with some specific IT questions covering things like TCP/IP, data backup, active directory, Ghost imaging, anti-virus, email, and Microsoft Office.
- The technical questions were pretty standard; most system admins who know Windows Server 2008 and have basic email experience would find them easy.
- Some unexpected questions were about strategies, how to integrate technology in the learning environment, how to handle school administrators, how to prioritize things, student information systems, and school board politics.
Student Recruiter
I sent in my application online through Indeed.com. A recruiter reached out to me for an initial phone screening. After that, the recruiter set up an in-person interview with the team lead. This interview took place at the Charter School location. The team lead gave me a tour of the school, and then we had a one-on-one interview.
- Can you explain your motivation for wanting to work at a charter school?
- What knowledge do you possess regarding charter schools in Columbus?
