Econometrica Interview Questions
& Process

The whole interview process, from initial contact to job offer, lasted about 2 weeks. I was phoned/e-mailed about coming to the company to have an in-person interview with 3 people, a senior economist, an economist, and a recently hired research assistant. Arriving there, the HR staff was very friendly in helping me feel comfortable and settle in to where I would have the interview. I wasn't told how long the interview would be prior to coming in, but it ended up being around an hour and 15 minutes. There were a wide variety of questions (each interviewer had different things to ask): behavioral/situational questions, teamwork/independent experience, personality, technical skill questions, future plans, and work fears. Get prepared for all sorts of questions. At the end, you are given time to ask them questions about anything. A few days later, I was contacted letting me know I was selected to move on in the recruiting process, the next step being contacting references and a background check. Within another few days, I was offered the position. I thought it was a really clean and efficient process. Only very very minor complaint (I can't remember anything negative about the process) is that at times I felt like HR could have given me more information instead of having to constantly ask them about things, but they were very friendly and quick to respond!

So first, I had to do an editing exercise, it was a 4-page doc, before I could even talk to the HR Director. She just asked me basic stuff like if I was currently employed, when I could start, if I was a citizen, and if I was okay with a background check. They let me know in under a week about moving forward to the next step, which was an interview with the head of the editing department. This interview focused on my editing experience and if I knew about style guides, and why I was interested in Econometrica. They said I'd hear back in about 2 weeks, but I never did. I followed up myself about 3 weeks later and they told me they hired someone else.

The interview process was pretty straightforward. It started with an HR phone screen, followed by a hiring team phone interview, and then a final hiring team interview via Teams. I found everyone I spoke with to be really nice and they were happy to answer any questions I had.

The HR manager called me on a Friday. Then, on the following Tuesday, I met with three HR people. The very next day, I had an in-person panel interview with about 5 or 6 people.
