First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Durham District School Board.
Teacher
It was pretty straightforward. Had one interview, could be in-person, phone, or video, with about 2-3 principals or vice-principals. They asked about my skills, experience, and how I'd tackle the job. Also got to ask them stuff about the school and the role.
- Tell me about your classroom management techniques.
- How do you incorporate technology into your teaching, particularly regarding content?
- Can you discuss your approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom?

The entire process went on for about 4 weeks. It was a 10 minute interview with 4 questions asked. The interviewers were late and not very friendly. There was no real conversation and it just ended suddenly. It wasn't a great interview, but I have liked working in the board.
- Given the demands of supply teaching, including varied schools, grades, and last-minute assignments, how would you prepare daily? And if there are no lesson plans, how do you keep students engaged?
- How would you adapt your teaching methods to cater to diverse learning styles among students?
- Describe your approach to managing a student who is consistently disruptive and not adhering to classroom routines.
Occasional Teacher
The career fair felt a bit disorganized and chaotic. There were many staff to help, but they seemed to lack direction and clarity amongst themselves. Staff provided unclear instructions, and there was poor communication between interview staff and other HR personnel. The interview itself was relaxed, and the interviewers were friendly. It was a panel interview with two prepared, scripted questions. The interviewers also asked a few follow-up questions to prompt more discussion. The process included a physical interview and a written question segment.
- Can you walk me through a lesson or unit you planned, including how you assessed and evaluated it, and how you knew it was successful?
- What are your strategies for managing a classroom?
Occasional Teacher
It was a really difficult interview with a lot of back-and-forth questioning from two principals. First, there was a short written task, and then they asked me two questions during an oral interview. The questions focused on unit planning and classroom management, and they really drilled down into scenarios that might come up during supply teaching.
- Can you elaborate on your approach to unit planning and assessment?
- How would you manage a classroom, and what would you do in specific supply teaching scenarios?
