Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dow Jones.
Software Engineer
First, there was an HR chat to get to know the company better. Then, I spoke with managers about the company culture. Finally, I had a coding interview with developers that involved both coding and architecture questions.

I applied online and it was downhill from there. I had the worlds most useless company recruiter. She would: Respond late, Not respond at all, Give wrong information, Forget to send files, Randomly call me, Go on vacation without saying anything, Forget me (I had to contact my future manager to ask where she went and what was going on), Didn't send me a benefits package before giving me an exploding offer on a weekend, Extended the process by 5 weeks due to her complete incompetence, She would text me (dear recruiters: texting is weird, email or scheduled phone call only, thanks). Lets step back: I applied, had a phone screen, then had a call where I wad asked behaviorial and light tech questions. I was then taken onsite and asked random coding questions, some not relevant to the position, simply because they were somewhere on my resume. Overall the process was too easy and any developer with a brain could have gotten hired. This happened in a few weeks. Then the awful recruiter just left me in the dark. Eventually weeks later, after going around her, she mysteriously surfaced (AND DIDNT APOLOGIZE) and I received a sudden offer on a Friday at 530pm when I was living my life. I had to accept it by Sunday. She made this experience painful to say the least.
- Tell me about yourself/past experiences
- How would you approach this technical problem?
- Coding questions based on my resume
Software Engineer
First there was a recruiter screen. Then a two hour hacker rank with 3 problems, two medium difficulty and an easy SQL question. It was straightforward data structures only. After that, a two hour group interview with the Manager, Lead, and Scrum Master. Lots of questions about my resume and experience. Nothing technical outside of speaking about experience. A few behavioral questions, but more of a getting to know you and your experience as a developer, what you are looking for.
- How would you handle distractions during your workday?
- Can you describe your experience with data structures and SQL?
- Tell me about your past experiences as a developer.
