First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dollar General.
General Manager
It was a straightforward and pleasant interview process. I got a clear understanding of my responsibilities and what was not expected. I really enjoyed the tour and was pleased to realize that with a few weeks of focused effort, I could bring the store up to a good standard.
- Tell me about a challenging situation you've faced.
General Manager
I interviewed through a job fair for a new store. They said all positions were filled, but there was a chance of internal transfers and that I might still get hired. They made me take a personality test that I thought was very misleading. It gave situations and asked what motivated the employee. I answered based on my 10+ years of management experience and what I thought motivated my employees. I didn't realize it was supposed to figure out what would motivate me. Tests like these should consider experienced managers. The computer said I wasn't a match, though the interviewer was disappointed and wanted me to reapply in 6 months.
- Joe dropped merchandise and kicked the box, breaking some items. What motivated Joe?
- The multiple-choice answers included: 'he was angry' and 'he didn't mean to kick the box'.
Assistant General Manager
I first met with the GM, and they told me the DM would reach out for a second interview. About 2.5 months later, I got a voicemail trying to schedule that second interview. They apologized for the long delay and said it was a clerical error. By then, I had already accepted and started a job with Family Dollar, so I obviously didn't go to the second interview.
- Tell me about your general experience.
- What would you do in this type of situation?
- What do you do when you're not working?
