The whole thing took about 4 weeks, but it's actually still not over, like 9 weeks later (more on that later). First, there were phone calls: one with HR, one with the hiring manager, and one with an engineer from the team. All pretty standard stuff, you know, career goals, coding questions, experience questions. Then the onsite was a 6-hour deep dive with about 7 people from the team and management. Again, pretty standard stuff. It involved coding riddles, experience questions, and general chats about the future of the job specialization. During the interviews, the job title and requirements kept changing without notice, but it was still close to what I applied for, going from a creative product development role to a more standard engineering role. After the onsite, they told me they were giving the position to an internal candidate, but wanted me to stay available for other roles they were opening up. I believed them and reapplied for a couple, but then got nothing but silence after following up with HR. It's been 5 weeks now. I don't know if it's just really slow bureaucracy there, or if their HR just can't handle declining candidates properly. Either way, I'm done following up, and Dolby left a bad impression.

I got a call from an internal recruiter about a role on a new, secret project. They didn't share many details but it sounded interesting, so I agreed to come in for on-site interviews. They said it would only take about 3 hours since I had to leave my current job. When I got there, the office was locked and no one was at the front. I called the recruiter, but he went to voicemail. After waiting outside for about 10 minutes, some people let me in and found the receptionist. Another 10 minutes passed before the recruiter got me. Then there was confusion about which room to use, and we finally found a different one, about 25 minutes late. The recruiter then went on about benefits and bonuses, acting like I already had an offer. I asked about an NDA to learn more about the project, but they don't do those. I was told I'd have to figure things out from vague descriptions. After that, I was grilled by the hiring manager, his boss, and some engineers. It was totally disorganized. They didn't stick to the schedule and kept changing interviewers without introductions. In the middle of the chaos, they left me alone in the room for 45 minutes. As expected, I was there way longer than 3 hours, missing half my workday. The interviews were strange. They asked questions about my skills but seemed really focused on a specific former employer, making me wonder if they just wanted info on that company. The recruiter mentioned quick hiring decisions and that this would be the only round, with an offer expected in 2-3 days. I never heard back, and a week later, my follow-ups were ignored. It's rude not to close with candidates. I later found out they interviewed a colleague of mine from that same former employer that same afternoon, and apparently, all their questions were about that company too. My colleague also never heard back.

It was a three-step process. First, I had an HR interview lasting about 20-30 minutes. Then, I completed a programming task. Finally, I interviewed with the team, which included 5 people. The whole process went really smoothly, and everyone I met was super welcoming and polite. They kept in touch via phone calls, followed by emails to confirm our conversations.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • No questions like 'What are your weaknesses?' during the HR interview, which was great.
  • Some technical questions were asked during the team interview.
  • They presented a simulated work situation to assess my reaction.
