First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dixon Advisory.
Financial Advisor
First, you send in an online application, so make sure you really tailor it to the job and highlight your relevant skills. Also, try to get a good sense of the team you're picking. If they like your application, they'll send you a link for some psychometric tests – verbal, numerical, and logical. SHL does these. If you ace those, an HR person will call you. They might ask some basic stuff like why you want to join Dixon. They'll set up either a one-on-one or panel interview and have you do an online behavioral test, which isn't actually graded. You'll interview for each of your preferred teams. These interviews are supposed to be about an hour long. Expect the usual behavioral questions where you'll need to use the STAR method. If you mentioned any technical skills or experience in your application, be ready for some technical questions, too. They want to see how well you can explain your technical knowledge. Definitely research the company and the industry – like, I was asked about recent changes in financial advice laws. After these interviews, they usually know who they want to hire. But if they're really stuck between a few people, they might bring you back for one last interview to make the final decision.
- What's your understanding of this industry?
- Describe a situation where you had to juggle several tasks at work.
- Tell me about a conflict you had with a colleague and how you resolved it.
Strategic Wealth Advisor
Submitted an online application which led to psychometric tests. Next, there was a phone call to set up the interview, and I had to complete a personality questionnaire before the main interviews. Then, I had two 45-minute interviews, one focusing on Strategic Wealth Advisory and the other on Portfolio Management & Stockbroking. The interviews were great, very conversational, and the interviewers seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me and had reviewed my application, leading to tailored questions. While there were some industry-specific questions, most were behavioral.
- Can you share an instance where you collaborated with individuals holding different viewpoints and describe how you navigated that scenario?
Portfolio Management and Stockbroking/Private Wealth Advisory
Submitted an online application with a cover letter and resume. After the testing phase, I received a call to schedule the interviews. There were two back-to-back interviews, each lasting about 30-45 minutes. To do well, it's important to research the firm and understand its values. Being a well-rounded candidate who knows more than just university material is key. Current events and trends are also helpful. Most importantly, showcase your personality and your unique story, as they also assess cultural fit.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Investment Analyst
I applied via a recruiter and had two phone calls with them. Then, I had two more interviews with Dixon staff, one on the phone and one in person. There was also the usual online psychometric test. The first phone interview was with HR, asking general questions about Dixon rather than specific topics. The next interview had two Dixon people, who were really nice. They asked more technical stuff, but it wasn't too hard.
- With 2,000,000 to invest, what single stock would you pick?
- Could you explain the recent SMSF policy update?
- Suppose you're handling a client's order and make a mistake. How would you handle it?
