Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dillard's.
Sales Associate
I went through two interviews at the Arrowhead / Glendale AZ location. The first one was a panel interview with three candidates, which was kind of awkward because the person interviewing me wasn't the one I was supposed to meet with, and they seemed like they didn't have much experience interviewing. The second interview was a one-on-one with a manager, and it seemed to go okay until the first interviewer from the panel showed up again and took over, even walking the sales floor with me. They asked some weird questions and made a bunch of wrong assumptions about my career goals, experience, and what I want in a job. I followed up by email and phone a few times, but they just ghosted me. After more than a month without hearing back, I just pulled my application.
- Which department do you want to work in?
- Do you think you're going to leave the job soon?
- What are your salary expectations?
Sales Associate
It was super quick and straightforward. They wanted to know about my past experience. They also asked if I'd ever worked with money or a cash register before and about my communication skills. Lastly, they asked about a past work conflict and to describe it.
- Tell me about your previous experience.
- Have you ever handled money or operated a cash register?
- How would you rate your communication skills?

The interview process at Dillard's is usually pretty simple and fast, often with just one or two steps. You'll usually start by applying online. If they like your application, they might call you in for an interview at the store. The first interview is normally with an Assistant Store Manager who checks if you're a good fit. If that goes well, you might have a second interview with the Store Manager. The whole thing is designed to be quick, with most people hearing back in about a day or two. The interviews are typically chill and conversational, trying to see if you have good customer service skills and if you'd fit in at Dillard's. They might ask about your past retail work, how you sell things, and how you handle customer interactions.
- Can you tell me something about yourself?
- What's your experience in retail?
- How do you approach sales?
