First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Digital Extremes.
Gameplay Programmer
It was a programming test for a small Visual Studio project. The test could be done in a couple of afternoons, but they gave me a week to complete it. What bothers me is they turned it down with no feedback. I literally don't know what I did so wrong to not continue the process.
- Find as many bugs as possible in the provided code, which compiles and runs but isn't production-ready.
- For bonus points, add statements to make error detection faster, using your judgment on when to halt the program on errors or bad input.
- Implement the "findPowerUp" function to find the shortest path to a specific type of PowerUp within a graph of PathNodes.
Gameplay Programmer
The interview process was straightforward and no-nonsense, which was appreciated. It consisted of a single interview combined with an aptitude test. I was asked about my approach to the aptitude test, including why I made certain choices, how it could be improved, and the potential contributions of different algorithms. Following that, I discussed my ideas and solutions for a similar problem.
- Regarding the previous aptitude test, can you elaborate on why you selected the algorithm you did and walk me through your thought process?
- Describe how you would program an explosion, beginning with a basic distance check.
- What approach would you take to detect an explosive projectile hitting a complex surface?
Software Developer
Worst interview in my entire 15 year career. I had an initial phone interview, then in person interview, where I got a tour. I was asked technical questions, which were not difficult. The non technical questions, however, I found were highly illegal and inappropriate. I ended up being given an offer, which I declined.
- You mentioned you have a fiancée, do you plan on getting married and having kids any time soon?
- How will being engaged impact your career?
