Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Demiurge Studios.
Software Engineer
First I talked to HR. Then they reviewed my programming test. After that, I had a technical interview with engineers. Then I spoke with a director and a designer. Finally, I talked to the engineer director.
- Can you share your best project experience?
- Can you share your worst project experience?
Software Engineer
The interview experience was really bad and unprofessional. They didn't ask any HR questions in the first interview and seemed uninterested in learning anything about me. The engineering director was incredibly rude and dismissive the whole time. Even though I wasn't told it would be a technical interview, I was asked a data structures and algorithms question. I did my best, but they kept patronizing me for not finding a faster solution than O(n). The interview wrapped up quickly, thankfully, and they said they needed candidates more familiar with DSA, which wasn't even in the job description. Seriously, avoid this company if that engineering director is involved in the interview.
- Could you devise an algorithm for a keycard system that grants access to employees?
Software Engineer
The interview started with a phone screen where we talked about my background and why I wanted to work here. Then, there was an online test that took about an hour. It was in a Google doc with five questions. I could write my code outside the browser and paste it in. The interviewer was there the whole time, available for questions, but I had uninterrupted time if I didn't need to ask anything. I struggled with the first three questions, leaving only 5 minutes for the last two. The onsite part had several interviews with different team members. The first one had three interviewers, and the second had two. The first interview involved whiteboarding, and the second focused on the earlier online test. I didn't perform well on the whiteboarding or the written test. The questions were the type you'd know if you'd studied for interviews. I was only vaguely familiar with them and while I could get a working solution, I was rejected immediately after the second part of the onsite. I don't know what happens after that. My recruiter asked for feedback since they didn't tell me anything when they kicked me out, and was told I got defensive. I disagree but understand their perspective. The process was pretty fast, mostly delayed by me, so I can't complain about that. I'm giving a neutral rating because I don't really like whiteboarding, but I also feel I should have passed.
- On a whiteboard, solve the boggle solver problem.
- Examine a code snippet and identify its problems.
- Write code to shuffle a deck of cards, represented as an array of 52 integers.
