To start, I got in touch with the professor. After sending my CV, we set a date for me to visit. The main discussion was in the morning. The professor, my daily supervisor, and I talked for about two hours. We covered my background briefly, spent most of the time on potential projects, and touched on some bureaucratic details. Then, a recently graduated PhD student joined me for lunch and shared insights about life in the group. In the afternoon, I met with many other PhD students and learned about their projects, mostly in one-on-one chats, which gave me a good sense of the group's culture. Later, a staff member was celebrating a birthday, so the group and I were invited for cake. I ended up spending over six hours there, getting a solid impression of the department. Everyone was very welcoming and willing to spend time with a potential PhD student.
