Submitted my application and got invited for the first round of interviews. After a preliminary screening, I got the invite for the 1st round interview, and had to pick a time slot before Christmas. After the 1st round, I was asked to write a report about the project. The entire process took about 2.5 months, including the Christmas break.

The entire hiring journey spanned over two months. I initially applied online. After a quick review, I got a 20-minute Skype call with the professor. During this call, I showed my previous work and discussed my PhD ideas for about 10 minutes to the professor and a Post-doc, followed by some technical questions. They seemed really nice. Later, the PI told me I made it to another Skype interview, this time with a panel including a senior professor (the department head), the PI, and the Post-doc. This interview was 45 minutes long, where I gave a more in-depth presentation on my past research and future PhD topic concepts. After that, I had a casual chat on Skype with some current PhD students. I found out later that my references were contacted for feedback about me. About three weeks later, I got an email saying I didn't get the position :(

I emailed HR with my CV, cover letter, master's thesis copy, and references. About 3-4 weeks later, I had a 30-minute video call with 3 research group members. They mainly asked about why I left my last job and my career plans, not about my skills or experience. They even asked about skills I don't have and that weren't listed as requirements. It felt like they hadn't read my application and weren't keen on hiring me. They also questioned my nationality, seeming unhappy I hadn't put it on my CV. I got a standard rejection email the next day. If hired, the next step would have been a presentation of the research plan to a panel.
