First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at DeKalb County School District.
Paraprofessional
Had one interview that lasted 90 minutes. It was focused on behavioral questions, how I'd handle classroom management, and strategies for supporting students. I met with some admin people and a few teachers. I also got a tour of the school. They called back a week later, and then HR set up the onboarding.
- Can you describe the typical daily responsibilities of a paraprofessional?
Software Engineer
They were expecting a seasoned developer at the undergraduate intern level. It's ridiculous and discouraging for emerging students to gain real world experience. They also did not state the first interview would be with the entire development team. Unprofessional
- Could you tell me about your experience with full lifecycle engineering, considering you are a freshman in college?
Teacher
I mentored students at Austin Elementary (K-5), helping them with academics, personal stuff, and motivation. I worked with teachers and parents to figure out what students needed and how to help them grow. I also strategized student growth with the school's stakeholders and gave updates on progress and improvement areas.
- What qualifications do you have and why do you want to teach?
- What is your qualification? and why do you want to be a teacher?
Librarian
First, they looked at my resume and cover letter, then we talked. Before the interview, I checked out the school's website to see what they were all about and what programs I thought the Library Media Center could help with or make better. It's important to remember every school is unique, so doing your homework is key. Chat with the Educational Media department about the school's focus and go in with some concrete ideas. Many administrators don't fully grasp all the capabilities of a Teacher Librarian. So, even if they don't completely agree with your vision, the fact that you have one will make you stand out.
- How would you contribute to the existing school programs?
- What are your ideas for supporting and enhancing current school programs through the Library Media Center?
