The hiring journey is split into 5 parts and took me about a month to wrap up. First, there's an online skills test. Then, I had my initial chat with the Principal, mainly to see if I really got the gig and its duties. If that went well, we dove into other questions from both sides. He's cool with answering any queries you might have. Just a heads-up, he's pretty direct, so don't expect fluffy language. If the conversation clicks, you'll get a take-home assignment. After that, you submit your assignment, which you can do at your own speed. Next up, a second interview to go over your assignment with the Principal and another team member, focusing on your solution and other design-related topics. They actually pay for this assignment if it meets their quality standards. It's cool they do that. Finally, they give you feedback on your assignment and the whole process, and then let you know if they want to hire you. It's a tough process with high expectations from the Director, but it's all laid out clearly in the job description and mentioned during the interviews.

I applied online through a web form and also had to take a general aptitude test. If I passed the test, they said I'd get an interview. I could then pick an online interview slot. I got confirmation and detailed instructions about the interview and who I'd be meeting, the Principle. He mentioned he might be a bit late due to other meetings. He was about 10-15 minutes late, but I was expecting it. The interview was short, maybe 20 minutes, and he asked 1 or 2 main questions. I also asked about the team structure and salary, which he answered. It went well, so the Principle said he'd send a paid test assignment for me to complete and return. I had to sign an NDA for it. After I sent it back, I had two online review meetings to discuss my work and design choices. At the end of the second meeting, he offered me the job and we discussed the details of the offer and what would be expected of me. I used that time to ask any remaining questions.

The interviewer (company owner) emailed beforehand, expecting me to have read the job description. The interview began with him asking about the position's functions. He interrupted and yelled, claiming I was wrong and hadn't read the JD. I explained I needed more context (clients, projects, exact functions) which should be discussed in an interview. He asked again, and he yelled again. It seems like his interview technique is to see who can tolerate his temper. It's frustrating to have wasted time applying and doing the pre-screening assessment, especially when he doesn't even read the resume.
