The interview rounds all went well for me, with the exception of the final one. The director I spoke with gave off a really bad vibe — I picked up on narcissism, toxic masculinity, and a general lack of professionalism. The questions he asked didn't make sense and felt more like he was trying to assert dominance rather than have a real conversation. He even admitted to intentionally making the questions tough. When I asked about the benefits of joining the company, he just gave a stale, old-school pitch: 'We're the fastest-growing company, with the best designers and top-quality work.' Honestly, I'm happy I didn't get the job. It's a relief to avoid such a toxic environment.

The initial interviews were fine, but the case presentation, where I presented a portfolio project, felt a bit off. The interviewers, who I think were Lead Designers, seemed disengaged and paid little attention to my presentation. I was given very specific instructions beforehand to present a detailed, large-scale case study that emphasized data usage, product thinking, exploration, and problem definition. I got a few questions during the presentation which I answered. Afterward, they said they wanted to see more UI and screens, which was strange since the initial brief focused heavily on UX and problem definition, with screens being a secondary element. I got a generic rejection email. When I asked for feedback, the reasons given contradicted my presentation and their own questions. For example, they asked if I spent two weeks solely on research, and I clarified I was also working on other projects and meeting stakeholders. However, the feedback stated, "Extensive research took one entire quarter, and this does not fit within Deel's timeline." This makes me think they either didn't listen to their own questions or fabricated reasons for rejection.

The interview process had four main stages: first, an introductory call with a recruiter. Second, a technical interview with a lead designer. Third, a case study review with a lead designer and a product manager. Fourth, an interview with the design director. Deel was responsive, providing quick, detailed feedback and information about upcoming stages. Before the case study review, I received some helpful advice on preparation, including do's and don'ts. The whole process felt quick and smooth compared to other companies.
