A friend referred me to a senior recruiter who took about 6 weeks to get in touch. The recruiter's initial email seemed outdated and unprofessional. She then asked if I was interested in studying Data Science. When I said yes, she clarified they were only teaching Software Engineers that term and that the class was full. I was concerned when she expressed confusion about AI's role in Data Science. She assured me I'd be a top candidate for the next session in Sept-Oct 2021. Months later, I learned the next class wasn't until January 2022. A few weeks after that, another recruiter contacted me about an upcoming application deadline. I applied, but was rejected within 24 hours, with the reason given being too many applicants. I mentioned my prior conversation with the senior recruiter and being at the 'top of the list.' I was then asked for my location, which I provided, stating I would be on-site. Instead of further interviews, a third recruiter sent an email that seemed to be part of an ongoing interview, containing links to exams for my track. I had a week to complete them, despite the study guide suggesting extensive preparation. I have a recent MSc in Computer Science and work as a Software Engineer, but I needed to fit three unexpected hours of exams into a busy schedule. The exams themselves were standard, though the study guide covered more topics. I completed most of the exams, noting how I would finish the rest, as suggested. I was rejected again without specific feedback. I mentioned in my response that I hadn't seen any encouragement to disclose disability information, which I usually require accommodation for, and had done my best under difficult circumstances. It felt like I was not wanted from the start, and the process could have been much shorter. The initial recruiters reflected poorly on the company culture, but the third recruiter was helpful and understanding. Companies should avoid wasting candidates' time.

I got referred by someone I know. The whole thing took more than 5 weeks. I had 4 interviews because one of the technical interviewers thought my background was a better fit for the data side. The recruiter and interviewers gave me good feedback. The recruiter emailed saying they wanted to move forward. We talked about pay and when I could start. They wanted me to join but my start date would have been about a month and a half away. I said okay and they mentioned we could redo the hiring process closer to the date. I emailed the recruiter two weeks before I was supposed to start, and she said they'd be starting the hiring process soon. The start date arrived, and I heard nothing. I reached out again, and she explained that her team had too many engineers available and they were waiting to move people out to start the hiring process. She said she'd call in a week. No call ever came. They completely ghosted me and didn't even bother to send an email about stopping the process. I wasted two months on this.

Technical Behavioral

I got an email from a recruiter about visiting their office in Alpharetta. When I went, she talked about the company and the job. The benefits were not great - no stock, no 401k match, and it feels like there's a limit to how much you can grow. It's basically a technical staffing company, like Accenture or PWC but without the brand name, just placing people on projects. The recruiter then set up a 8 AM phone interview, which is pretty inconvenient when you're working. The interviewer was technical and just asked about the technologies I've used, without really testing my skills. It was about 30 minutes and he seemed rushed. I didn't hear back for a month, and by then I had already accepted a better offer.
