FP&A Implementation Specialist
The first step was a recruiter call, pretty standard stuff, just going over the basics and taking notes for the hiring manager who hadn't even seen my CV yet. Then came this big assessment, which felt like a lot, asking for an income statement with variance analysis and assumptions comparing two periods and budget vs actual. I also had to do a presentation on a company's market share in Canada and an investment recommendation by province. For the Excel part, it was just regular functions like Index/Match, Sumifs, and Pivots, nothing too crazy like queries or advanced modeling. I did ask if the assessment was a big ask since they hadn't got my CV, and they said sending it with the assessment would help. It felt more like a graduate scheme thing than for someone with a few years of FP&A experience, which my CV showed.
- Can you prepare a P&L statement comparing February 2024 actuals to January 2024 actuals, as well as February 2024 actuals against the budget, and then share your key observations?
- What is the market share of company X in each Canadian province, and could you present this using graphs or tables?
- Based on the market share data, in which province do you recommend company X should invest, and please provide a 1-2 slide presentation to support your recommendation, including key factors and suggested initiatives?
FP&A Integration Specialist
Started with a recruiter call. Then, there was a three-part assignment with a 90-minute time limit. The job description had 11 qualifications, and the last one, "exposure to SFTP, SQL, and JSON/API", was the focus of the take-home test. It feels like they auto-filter people based on just one skill before you even talk to a hiring manager. This kind of narrow pre-selection means they aren't looking at the bigger picture of whether a candidate has the overall skills needed for the job. Considering the company's size and stage, the salary range, and only talking to a recruiter, spending about 2 hours on the assignment probably isn't worth the return.
- Can you design a high-level flowchart illustrating the data flow from System A to System B, and include example functions and sample data retrieval that would impress a client?
FP&A Customer Success Manager
The hiring process kicked off with a preliminary chat and then quickly moved to a take-home Excel case study that had a tight 2-hour deadline. It was a tough assignment that really needed good prep, analysis, and presentation skills. While I get that not everyone can make the cut, the biggest bummer was the lack of basic consideration for the effort put in. After finishing a task that took a lot of dedication, I just got a standard rejection email with zero feedback. If a company expects candidates to put in this much work, the least they can do is offer some useful feedback. Not doing so makes the whole thing feel one-sided and dismissive of candidates' time and energy. Honest, helpful feedback would have made this a fair and useful experience, even without an offer.
- Could you complete a financial planning and analysis case study using Excel, which involves creating models, interpreting outcomes, and effectively communicating your findings?
FP&A Customer Success Manager
The recruiter asked me to introduce myself in English for a 20-minute chat. After that, I got an Excel assignment to do at home, due in 90 minutes. I needed to use Pivot tables, SUMIFS, VLOOKUP, and Graphs, and also create an income statement and PowerPoint slides. It wasn't too hard, but I didn't manage my time well, which messed me up.
