It took about a month from applying to hearing back, but after that, things moved really fast. There was a quick chat that was basically just about the job, then a virtual interview with my direct supervisor and someone regional. It was pretty chill and relaxed, not intense at all. Mostly questions about past experiences, but they did ask a couple of things that were kind of technical, about trucks and diesel engines. Since automotive isn't my main thing, they emphasized that knowing about current automotive tech and diesel engines is obviously important.

I was found through the SWE database before the conference and had an interview with two managers from Daimler in Portland. It was entirely behavioral, with many questions about my previous projects and experiences, and how I approach problems. Overall, it was a great interview. I got an offer within an hour after the interview, but the salary was non-negotiable. There was a sign-on bonus, but no relocation. When I asked the recruiter about it, she said the sign-on bonus was for relocation. I was shocked because those are totally separate things. Daimler wouldn't budge on my salary or give me a relocation lump sum. I even offered to show them competing offers with higher salaries, but they weren't interested. I really liked talking to the hiring managers and wanted the job, but their refusal to adjust my compensation package was really unsettling. After talking to others who got offers from Daimler at SWE, I found out they had the same issue and rejected the offers because of it. I hate to be negative, but I suspect Daimler came to SWE as a PR move or to find cheap engineers. It's sad.
