After applying online, I had a phone interview where they asked typical questions like 'Why Carphone Warehouse?' and 'Tell me about yourself.' They said I passed immediately and scheduled a face-to-face interview at the store. They also asked if I preferred Apple or Samsung, just to get to know me. The in-store interview was with two assistant managers, one of whom I spoke to on the phone. They asked me to introduce myself, talk about my hobbies, and explain my interest in sales and the company. Then, I had to take out my phone and sell them an iPhone 6 based on my existing knowledge. After that, I had to compare it to the iPhone 7, emphasizing the iPhone 6's advantages. Next, they gave me their Samsung Galaxy S7, which I knew nothing about, and asked me to sell it to them. Following that, we did a role-play exercise using their PinPoint software on a tablet. The goal was to act as a salesperson providing a good deal to a 'customer,' demonstrating familiarity with the software, confident presentation, and asking plenty of questions. They also asked a few more general questions, like what I'd contribute to the team in terms of sales and personality, my ability to hit targets, and how I'd handle a day with no sales. Despite sounding like a lot, the interview only lasted 30 minutes, and having two interviewers actually made it feel more comfortable!

If you get past the initial application, they'll give you a call. You'll have a quick chat to see why you want to work there and what you'd bring to the team. I got a call two days after applying and they told me I was successful and invited me in for a three-part interview. The interview has three parts. 1. You'll hang out on the shop floor and chat with customers. I just walked up to a customer, introduced myself, and told them it was part of my interview. I got lucky 'cause the lady was super nice and asked me to tell her about iPads. We had a nice chat and she told a manager how helpful and polite I was. 2. A face-to-face interview where they ask standard questions like 'tell me a time when...' They also want to know if you're flexible and available during busy times like Christmas. 3. You have to sell something to a store employee. I had to sell a fictional tablet. I was given an info sheet and details about deals. Make sure you ask questions and figure out what the 'customer' wants, then match it to the product. Also, I knew beforehand that Currys is strict about promoting their insurance and helpline, so make sure to push them during the role-play.

Behavioral Case Presentation

I had an interview at 10am. They said it would be 1:1 over the phone, but when I got there, another candidate was there. We went upstairs with what I think was the store manager and an assistant. We sat down and filled out our details. Then, the assistant explained the next part, a role-playing activity. I was a bit worried about this, but it turned out to be a 1:1. We were given a worksheet with details of three mobile phone contracts (prices and usage limits). The manager pretended to be a customer wanting an upgrade. I had to sell him the best contract based on his answers. I greeted him and asked about his phone usage. We could use the sheet and take notes. I also had to promote the benefits of the current handset. After the role-play, I got some good feedback, and we moved to the competency interview. The manager asked standard questions like 'Why Carphone Warehouse?'. After that, it was over, and they wished me luck. Right after I left, the manager of the store I actually applied for called and asked me to come in the same day. When I told her I'd just finished an interview, she seemed confused. I'm not sure why.
