Data Scientist
Had an HR interview that was pretty straightforward. Then they scheduled a Data Science review for the following week where I met with a data science interviewer who asked a lot of machine learning questions specifically about my past projects.
- Can you describe your past projects?
Data Scientist
I found the role through a data science bootcamp. This was going to be my first job after grad school. The first step was a phone call with the hiring manager, who reviewed my resume. He really dug into my PhD project, asking for a lot of detail about the subject, techniques, and software I used. He seemed genuinely curious even though my research wasn't in his field. Next, I had to complete a data challenge. They gave me an Excel file with their customer data and posed 6 questions. I had 48 hours to submit my code and a report, either in PowerPoint or Word. The email also listed 3 more questions, and they said it shouldn't take more than 2-4 hours. But it actually took me about 10-12 hours to finish, and working on the presentation alone took 2-3 hours for the 9 questions. I sent my submission but never heard anything back. I even followed up with HR two weeks later, but they didn't even reply. It was pretty unprofessional to just ignore me after I spent so much time on the data challenge. A simple reply would have been appreciated.
- Can you elaborate on the details of your resume and previous projects?
- Can you walk me through your PhD project, covering the topic, methodologies, and tools utilized?
- Could you describe the methods and tools you employed in your PhD research?
Data Scientist
The whole process took about 2 weeks. First, there was an HR call. Then, a Hiring Manager call, which felt a bit rude and didn't offer much time for questions. After that, a case study involving an ML project with a CSV file. The HM called back about the case study, saying it wasn't great, but surprisingly still offered me another round. This felt unprofessional. The final round was with a VP, who seemed a bit inattentive and it was unclear if they fully grasped my points.
- Can you describe past projects that are relevant to this role?
