First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Crumbs Bake Shop.
Associate
I found the opening on the Crumbs website and contacted them via email to express my interest and inquire about potential openings. About a week later, an HR rep reached out and invited me to a group interview. It was a big group, about 10 of us, and they ended up hiring 3 people. The cool part was everyone got different questions, so no one's answers overlapped too much. I heard back in a few days, and they brought me in for a paid training shift that runs from 6 AM to 3 PM. You learn all about the cupcakes and how to work the espresso machine. After that, you should start working within about a week and a half.
- Tell me about a time you were really proud of something.
- Who is someone that inspires you?
Store Associate
The process to become a regular hourly associate is more involved than you might think. First, you need to complete the online application, as everything is handled online – don't bother calling the stores about your resume, they won't have the info and it's annoying. The application itself has many questions. You'll also be asked to submit a cover letter (yes, for a part-time retail job) and your resume. Then it's a waiting game unless you have a contact inside who knows if they're hiring immediately. You'll get a call from a store manager (or maybe district manager) to set up a phone interview. This phone interview is about 10-15 minutes long. If they want to proceed, the SM/DM will call you back to arrange an in-person interview. During the in-person interview, you'll speak with the DM, who will ask basic, standard retail-focused questions. At the end, ask when you can expect to hear back. You'll wait some more, but you'll likely have a good sense of whether you'll be hired by the time you leave.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses? Be prepared.
- What action would you take if you observed theft from the tip jar?
- What are your main pet peeves when collaborating with colleagues?
Graphic Designer
Excited to interview with Crumbs for a corporate office position, not in a bake shop. Had a phone interview with HR, then a face-to-face interview. Thought it went great and I was very qualified. They did a background check and made it sound like I was getting the job, wanting me to meet the CEO and president. Went in for that interview (taking sick days off work) and only one person was there without any warning or explanation. She seemed annoyed and disinterested, making it the most awkward interview ever. A week later, got an email saying they weren't sure if they were hiring for the position anymore, but would 'definitely keep me updated.' Never heard from them again. Completely unprofessional and rude way to treat someone.
- What changes would you suggest for Crumbs' visual branding, and what would be your strategy for putting those changes into action?
Manager
It started with a phone call with regional HR, who asked me about my experience from my resume. This was followed by a meeting with the regional HR, store manager, and district manager. We had coffee and cupcakes and just talked about general interview stuff. It was super laid-back. I wore jeans and a nice top. The phone chat was about 30 minutes, and the in-person meeting was about an hour and a half.
- Tell me about your experience managing teams of at least four people.
- Can you make espresso and decorate cakes?
- What would you do if a customer demanded a refund?
