First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Crossroads Trading.
Sales Associate
This was a normal interview for a Sales Associate role. They asked questions about retail situations and how I handle challenging scenarios like stress and negative customer interactions. They also wanted to know if I keep up with current trends and have opinions on them.
- Tell me about how you perform under stress.
- Describe a situation where you had to perform under stress.
- How do you handle difficult customers?

I found the job on craigslist and sent my resume/cover letter via email. Then I got an email back asking me to come in to fill out an application. The application was long, like 3-4 pages, asking about past jobs, current fashion brands I like, and why I like Crossroads. When I turned it in, they told me to come back in 2 days for an interview with the manager. I got there a little early, told the buyer I was there for an interview. The store manager came and got me about 10 minutes later and took me to the back room. I interviewed with the store manager and another employee. They asked me a ton of questions, like 3 pages worth, and took lots of notes without much feedback. Then, they gave me a box of clothes to sort into two piles: what I would accept and what I would deny. I also had to price each item and say why I accepted or denied it. Finally, there was a math and spelling test. The next day, they called to see if I'd do a second interview with the district manager. I haven't called them back yet.
- What do you do for fun?
- Where do you see yourself career-wise in the future?
- Describe three instances where you received praise at work.

I applied online and the same day they emailed me saying they wanted to interview me by phone. We scheduled the interview for a few days later. On the day of the interview, I received an email that she had to go out of town and would call me in a couple of weeks after she returned. So, my phone interview was delayed for about 3 weeks. The day it was finally supposed to happen again, the interviewer 'forgot' to call me. I emailed her, then she called the next day. After about a 20 minute phone call, it seemed fine, until I mentioned that my daughter was 26. The interview abruptly ended! I then received an email stating that I did not meet the qualifications they were looking for. I felt I had experienced age discrimination, so I sent an email calmly explaining that. The interviewer's supervisor then emailed/called me, concerned that I felt I had been discriminated against, and said her associate thought I only wanted holiday work. I explained that I had made it very clear that I wanted full-time work, was willing to work my way up, had an open schedule, and I had mentioned that I was available for the entire holiday, as I would not be going out of town. My resume clearly showed my experience, and they were interested because of my resume. I have great experience as a retail associate, a key holder, and a manager with excellent references, and a great background check. The supervisor told me to go to the store near me that I wanted to work at, and to fill out an application there. She said she had told them about me. I went to the store the next week. They had a huge sign on the front window saying they are hiring and to apply inside. I went in, asked for an application, and was told that they were all full, and no longer taking applications, but I could apply online - even though the sign is still posted. Then she dismissively went back to checking clothing from a seller. That was it. I give up trying to work there. They clearly have an age limit for their staff. I am a very youthful, fit, friendly, well-groomed, trendy silver-haired, 60 years young, woman.
