First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Creative Planning.
Accountant
The interview process started with an initial phone screen with HR. They went over the company broadly and what the job would be like. They also asked for basic personal information and what I was looking for in a role. The second round was a very casual video interview with a manager and director (I think). They asked more general questions about my experience and reasons for leaving my current job. They were upfront about the next steps and actually followed through. I found out within a week that I didn't move forward, which I expected. One thing that stood out was the salary; the hourly rate was way below market and what I've earned recently. Overall, it was a decent experience with nice people, but it just wasn't the right fit for me.
- Could you tell me about your position at XYZ?
- What kind of software have you worked with?
Finance and Accounting Staff
The interview process consisted mostly of very simple questions that were already on my resume. There were also some inappropriate, possibly illegal, questions about my personal life. At the end, the interviewer said my experience didn't match the role, even though they had said I was a great fit in our initial emails. I thought it was a perfect match for my background and I would have been great in the role. I was ghosted and never heard back after the interview. I was also told the role paid about 35% less than I currently make, which is industry average, and the way it was said made me think they felt I was too competent to accept the role (not trying to brag, just informing others).
- Can you tell me about your work background?
- How did you fund your college education?
- Could you describe your family life and any personal responsibilities you have outside of work?
Operations Manager
The interview process was convenient and worked around my current job schedule, allowing for an in-person interview. I met the Operations Director, Jeff Aleshire, who was very welcoming and kind. Following that, I interviewed with Peter. He's a good man who is passionate about his company and genuinely cares about his employees, believing that happy employees lead to happy results in business. It was the best interview experience I've ever had.
- What makes you the best candidate for this position?
Financial Planner
I applied online and was contacted by a financial planner at the company's headquarters. Then I had a quick phone interview with a regional director, followed by an in-person interview with them. It went well, and I got contacted by the director of financial planning. After a phone interview with the director, describing the position and department, they wanted me to visit the headquarters for a formal in-person interview. At the in-person interview I met with 2 financial planners, a wealth manager, the director of FP, and the company's president. Everyone was nice, but I left after the interviews very confused about my standing. It was a long process to end up being declined an offer. Feedback would have been appreciated after the interview; as a lot of time, preparation, scheduling, and expense went into the process.
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
- Given some hypothetical financial planning scenarios, how would you approach them to arrive at a client solution?
