Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Council On International Educational Exchange.
Program Manager
It was a pretty easy hiring process, usually taking about 2 steps. The interviews focused on my experience and how well I'd fit working with students. There was a lot of emphasis on DEI. The whole thing took about 3 weeks.
- When things get busy, how do you handle juggling multiple tasks?
Program Manager
The interview process was poorly communicated, organized, and structured. It started with emails from the recruiter to schedule one interview. There was no initial phone screening; the recruiter immediately asked about salary expectations and stated the maximum salary. This was all done via email. The recruiter then scheduled a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager, which I was told would be the only one. After that interview, the recruiter emailed asking for references. I called the recruiter to clarify if this meant I was moving to the next steps, as references are usually requested after a verbal offer. The recruiter could only say I would get a response in two weeks and couldn't explain the next steps. After that, there was complete silence, no follow-up, not even to say I wasn't selected. I'd advise anyone not to waste their time with CIEE.
- Can you tell us about your experience?
Program Manager
I got an email for a video interview that I had to record on another company's platform. I spent over an hour on it because the platform's recording tools weren't working. It's been three weeks and I haven't heard anything back. I sent a follow-up email and still nothing. I found this really insulting, especially after the terrible experience of the video interview, which is just a waste of everyone's time. I've learned to never do something like this again.
